Microsoft Azure CDN

azureedge.net is the default domain for Microsoft Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN) endpoints. When organizations deploy content through Azure CDN, their resources become accessible via URLs like .azureedge.net, providing globally distributed content delivery.

What It Does

Azure CDN is a distributed network of servers that caches and delivers web content from edge locations geographically close to end users:

  • Content caching - Static assets (images, scripts, stylesheets, videos) are cached at edge servers worldwide
  • Latency reduction - Users receive content from the nearest point-of-presence (POP) rather than distant origin servers
  • Origin offloading - Edge servers handle repeat requests, reducing load on origin infrastructure
  • Scalability - Handles traffic spikes and high-load scenarios without impacting origin servers

Key Features

  • Dynamic site acceleration for non-cacheable content
  • HTTPS support with custom domains
  • Geo-filtering to restrict content by region
  • File compression and optimization
  • Configurable caching rules and TTL settings
  • Integration with Azure Blob Storage, Web Apps, and other Azure services

Technical Details

When a user requests content from an azureedge.net URL, DNS routes the request to the optimal POP location. If the content is cached, it is served immediately; otherwise, the edge server fetches it from the origin, caches it (default TTL: 7 days), and serves future requests from cache.

Note: Azure CDN from Microsoft (classic) is being retired. New deployments use Azure Front Door Standard/Premium tiers as the successor platform.
